skates are members of the rajidae. most skates are a mottled brownish color with whitish undersides & usually rest on the bottom during the day, lying partly buried in sand or mud, become active at night to feed on shellfish, crustaceans & sometimes small fish. they swim by making smooth undulations of their pectoral fins (croxfiber will try to issue articles on rajiformes i.e. 8 families of cartilaginous fish & includes the rays, mantas, sawfish & skates)
