giant squid weighing up to 27kg have invaded the california waters off newport beach & are being caught by sport fishermen by hunderds

in this photo released by newport landing sport fishing taken on sunday, january 31, 2010 showing frankie duenas from anaheim, california, holding a giant squid he caught off the coast of newport beach

the animals weight between 9 & 18kg but a few fishermen
have reeled in 27kg creatures..

the squid showed up last week (late january 2010) & anglers started booking twilight fishing trips over the weekend to catch them!

the humboldt squid is also called the jumbo squid or jumbo flying squid & squirts ink to protect itself (humboldt means jumbo)

they can grow up to 45kg & 1.8 meters long & follow food sources!

the squid have also recently been spotted off san diego,
oregon & washington, all on the US west coast

robert woodbury with newport landing sportfishing told the orange country register that anglers in the southern california county have caught about 400 of the big squid since friday night (january 29, 2010)
