giant squid weighing up to 27kg have invaded the california waters off newport beach & are being caught by sport fishermen by hunderds
in this photo released by newport landing sport fishing taken on sunday, january 31, 2010 showing frankie duenas from anaheim, california, holding a giant squid he caught off the coast of newport beach
the animals weight between 9 & 18kg but a few fishermen
have reeled in 27kg creatures..
the squid showed up last week (late january 2010) & anglers started booking twilight fishing trips over the weekend to catch them!
the humboldt squid is also called the jumbo squid or jumbo flying squid & squirts ink to protect itself (humboldt means jumbo)
they can grow up to 45kg & 1.8 meters long & follow food sources!

the squid have also recently been spotted off san diego,
oregon & washington, all on the US west coast
robert woodbury with newport landing sportfishing told the orange country register that anglers in the southern california county have caught about 400 of the big squid since friday night (january 29, 2010)
hafiCF - will jumbo squids attack brunei darussalam's bay?
azimCF - nothing is impossible..
abgCF - yes & no... lets fish! game on... feel it!

Exocoetidae known as flying fish, are a marine fish family comprising about 64 species grouped in seven to nine genera
Flying fish are found in all of the major oceans, particularly in the warm tropical & subtropical waters of the Atlantic, Pacific & Indian oceans
Their most striking feature is their pectoral fins which are unusually large, and enable the fish to hide and escape from predators by leaping out of the water, taking short glided flights through air just above the water's surface
Their glides are typically around 50 m (160 ft), but they can use updrafts at the leading edge of waves to cover distances of at least 400 m (1,300 ft)
In order to glide upward out of the water, a flying fish moves its tail to up to 70 times per second, which "vibrates" to produce enough speed to burst through the surface. It then spreads its pectoral fins and tilts them slightly upwards to lift itself to glide through the air
take off..
its a bird, its a plane.. its a flying fish!
azimCF - what bait do they fancy?
